  • Knee Pain in Winter

Winter does not have to be a pain, at least not in your knees! Most people associate decreasing temperatures with increasing pain in their joints. Why is that? One explanation is that the cooler temperatures make our nerve endings more sensitive, therefore the pain experienced in winter is more intense. Research from Tufts University suggests colder weather can result in painful changes in the thickness of joint fluid.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to proactively manage your pain.

    • Bundle up! Keeping your knees covered and as warm as possible when going out in the cold will help reduce pain
    • Stay Active! One reason winter takes such a toll on your health is that being stuck indoors means you are less likely to exercise. Extended periods of rest (i.e. binge watching TV on the couch because it’s freezing outside) usually results in increased stiffness and pain. Staying active and keeping your body in motion will improve circulation to your knees and help lubricate your joints, motion is lotion! Lifting light weights can also help strengthen and build joint supporting muscles. Just be sure to rest and space your activities out so your knees have time to recuperate.
    • Massage Massage can help relieve pain, decrease stiffness and improve range of motion.
    • Stay Hydrated! The benefits of proper hydration are endless. The value to your knees is softening and proper hydration of the cartilage. Additionally, drinking enough water creates adequate blood volume which allows for the distribution of nutrients to your joints.
    • Eat Smart! Focus on foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon and nuts which help decrease inflammation. Also try incorporating the spice turmeric, which has anti-inflammatory properties, as often as possible. Foods rich in Vitamin K such as green beans, kale, asparagus and cabbage have pain-soothing properties. You can also help halt cartilage loss by increasing foods rich in Vitamin C such as citrus fruits, berries and peppers.

** Opt for high fiber whole grains which help reduce inflammation over refined grains which may cause inflammation. Also avoid foods high in omega-6 fatty acids such as vegetable oil and fast food which can cause increased inflammation.  Warm Baths A great excuse to pamper yourself and relax! A warm bath can relax the muscles surrounding the knee and decrease joint stiffness.

"After my car accident on June 23rd, 2015, I was suffering from back pain and neck pain on a daily basis."

    nataly

Living with pain is no way to live. I saw myself not being able to do many activities and it complicated my life in many ways. Upon receiving chiropractic adjustments, I immediately saw a difference. I had less back pain, neck pain and headaches. I was able to sleep better during the night and even breathe better! I have also been receiving physical therapy the last couple of months. I have seen major improvement. I have had little to no pain when exercising and less discomfort during the day. Thank you to everyone at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation for helping me live a pain free life!

"A few months ago, I popped my right hamstring tendon."

I went to see an AMAZING yoga doctor, Dr. Dandrea at Monmouth Pain at their new gorgeous state-of-the-art location in Wall Township. After only 5 sessions during 3 weeks, my hamstring was fixed! AND I can do my overhead Bird of Paradise even better now. I highly recommended for yogis and athletes in central NJ area, Dr. Dandrea knows the body and different techniques as a yogi himself, not your typical chiropractor. So Happy!

During the course of my treatment every staff member greeted me by name and with a smile and made me feel that they truly cared about my progress. "I have never received such wonderful treatment like this anywhere else."

    Ann-C

I absolutely have the highest respect for all who work at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation. I have had a wonderful experience, and appreciate the expert treatment I receive from Dr. Chang and Dr Murray. Everyone at Monmouth Pain makes you feel like you are the only one that matters. When I first came to Monmouth Pain I could hardly walk and was experiencing severe lower back pain. With pain management, chiropractic treatment, and acupuncture, I have come a long way with my condition (herniated disks in lower back) and for a while the pain was gone. When the pain returned Dr Murray and Dr Chang knew exactly what to do. It is a slow process but improves with every single treatment. I also experience severe neck pain. I suffered from whiplash symptoms in my neck. I am now pain free in my neck and gained mobility. I highly recommend the caring individual that work here. I send everyone to Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation. I have never received such wonderful treatment like this anywhere else. And having everyone work a team approach under one roof is great!!

"The results have been fantastic and I am now back to work in my profession as a union ironworker."

    Richard-P

I suffered an injury to my right knee on October 24 2013. After trying to “walk it off” for almost two weeks, I realized it was time to seek some specialized treatment. I found Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation through a Google search for sports medicine facilities in my are, and am I glad I did. From the moment i walked in, the doctors, physical therapists, and all of the staff were amazing at making me feel comfortable about being there. I had torn my m.c.l. and my meniscus although both tears were minor and did not warrant any surgery. The office put together a course of treatment for me that has put me back in the game. I was given a cortisone injection along with therapy three days per week and several acupuncture sessions. The results have been fantastic and I am now back to work in my profession as a union ironworker which is very physically demanding. If you or someone you know is dealing with pain and does not know where to turn, I would highly recommend Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation.

"The staff is probably the best as they are completely dedicated to recovery."

    Nick-L.-145x180

When I first came to Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation I could barely walk. The progress that I have experienced is almost unbelievable. Those that know me say the progress is more than expected. I walk now free of all apparatuses. The staff is probably the best as they are completely dedicated to recovery. I had a bilateral knee replacement and began therapy on 6/25/12. By 7/8/12 I was walking. The staff continues to seek progress and I thank them.

"Entering your facility, the healing process begins with your first step inside."

    Nick-C.

It is no secret that “people in pain” seek relief by visiting a medical facility. All to often our first encounter is with an emotionless staff employee sitting behind a glass slider petition. The slider opens, you are handed a clipboard and pen(sometimes), and then the slider closes. By now you certainly get my drift. Entering your facility, the healing process begins with your first step inside. Your greeted with smiles and a warm welcome from your admin. staff ( no glass sliders thank you) with a calming background of appropriate tunes (leaving the RAP for outside the office). There is a relaxing flow throughout the workplace with much interaction between patients and caregivers which makes you almost forget why you are there. I interpret that as a very positive aspect. All the while each and every patient is being attended to in a professional manner with the utmost care and respect. You and your staff should be proud of the services provided; from the administration staff to the caregivers. It is a wining combination for success, repeat customers, and referrals. You will certainly get both from me.

"I can truly say Monmouth Pain took me out of my serious pain and let me live my life again!"

I had been to 3 orthopedic surgeons who ALL told me I needed knee replacements. I came into Monmouth Pain after finding in the AD in a newspaper article. I met with Dr. Dandrea at the time and started my treatments which really helped! I then started Acupuncture with Ranko down the line, which I was very skeptical about. I can tell you now that if I miss a treatment with him, I feel it! I can truly say Monmouth Pain took me out of my serious pain and let me live my life again!

"They really do care. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!"

I never tried acupuncture until I came to Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation. I have an open mind and was willing to try anything that could possibly help me with my lupus symptoms. I am so happy that I did. I feel so much better now than I did the first day I walked in here. They pinpoint whatever ails me and they focus on that area until I feel better. Because of Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation, I now have my spirit back and a pep in my step. I am so active now and feel better than I have in many years. Interventional Pain Management

For patients with more serious pain and immobility, our office discourages surgery whenever possible. We also steer our patients away from the long-term use of painkilling medications. Instead, we offer holistically oriented pain management through a variety of interventional pain management techniques, including Epidural Steroid Injections (for back pain), Joint Injections, and Viscosupplementation for knee pain.

Additionally, we utilize all natural homeopathic remedies when appropriate.  These homeopathic remedies are injected directly into the site of pain to naturally reduce pain and inflammation.
