Ankle
Sprain Treatment at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation in Red Bank
New Jersey
Overview
of an Ankle Sprain
Ankle
sprains are one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries. In
the United States alone there are 23,000 ankle sprains each day.
There have been over 30 studies in medical literature to determine
the best and most effective form of treatment. Monmouth Pain and
Rehabilitation utilizes the most technologically advanced forms
of rehabilitation to provide pain relief and more importantly, to
help repair the ankle through innovative stabilization techniques.
Anatomy
of an Ankle Sprain
The
ankle joint is made up of three bones: the tibia, the fibula and
the talus. These bones are held together by a series of tendons
and ligaments. Tendons attach muscle to bone. The tendons attach
to various muscles which provide mobility. Ligaments attach bone
to bone.
An
ankle sprain is a insult to the integrity of the ligament. The most
commonly injured ligament is the anterior talo-fibular ligament.
This ligament connects the front part of the fibula to the talus
bone on outside part of the ankle joint.
Abnormal
loading onto the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the ankle are
caused most commonly by a twisting force such as when the ankle
“rolls over.”
How
do you know whether you have a Sprain or a Break?
An
xray is typically the first step in determining whether or not there
is a broken bone. At Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation, we have radiographic
equipment on site to perform any necessary xrays. In addition to
xrays, our physicians and licensed physical therapists provide comprehensive
examinations prior to any treatment.
If
not Treated Properly, Recurrence is Common
According
to the research, 5% to 33% of patients with an ankle sprain still
had pain after one year (1). 15% to 64% had not fully recovered
at 3 years. The risk of re-sprains ranged in these studies from
3% to 34%. The factors that cause continued pain and re-injury are
due primarily to the loss of proper function to the ankle.
Treatment
for Ankle Sprains at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation
At
Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation, we utilize several innovative
forms of treatment for ankle sprains including low level
laser therapy for pain and the Power
Plate whole body vibration therapy for stabilization and prevention
for further injury. Additionally our trained staff of licensed New
Jersey physical therapists utilize ultrasound, hands on muscle
therapy, massage, heat, ice and electric stimulation to treat ankle
sprains.
