as well as interventional procedures such as coccyx injections,

and conditions.
Coccyx
Injections
Injections
of a corticosteroid as well as an anesthetic may be used as part
of an overall plan of rehabilitation and pain management when lower
back pain originates from the coccyx (the tailbone). While numbing
agents provide temporary relief, corticosteroids last for several
weeks, often allowing patients to use physical therapy, chiropractic,
or other rehabilitative practices to manage the trauma or illness
that is causing pain.
The
technical term for pain in the tailbone is coccydynia. Found at
the base of the spine, the coccyx is surrounded by tendons and ligaments
which can be affected by injury or disease. While the symptoms and
severity of this condition vary between patients, the main indicator
of coccydynia is pain that is aggravated or caused by sitting.
There
are a variety of reasons that patients experience coccyx pain. These
include:
•
Osteoarthritis - The formation of bone spurs;
• Childbirth;
• Traumas such as slips and falls;
• Sports injuries (bike
riding, for example);
• Muscle spasms; and
• Spinal misalignment
Because
this painful condition may also be caused by certain cancers, it’s
important to have a complete diagnosis before beginning any treatment.
Diagnostic accuracy is also a crucial factor in providing targeted
and successful plans of rehabilitation and when determining if it
is necessary to administer corticosteroid injections.
At
Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation, our Medical
Director makes use of a number of diagnostic tools, including
fluoroscopy, x-ray, and ultrasound.
Our office will also interpret the results of Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI). In some cases, an injection of an anesthetic numbing
agent may be used to determine the exact location of pain.
It’s
time to schedule a consultation with our medical staff when sitting
becomes a painful experience. Often, the length of time spent in
the seated position determines the intensity and duration of pain.
Additionally, pain may be exacerbated when attempting to stand up,
and there may be shooting pains down the back of the leg.
In some cases, the symptoms of coccyx pain are quite similar to
sciatica or other conditions; this is
yet another reason that a proper diagnosis is essential.
