Pain
Management in Red Bank, NJ for Fibromyalgia
Multi-Disciplinary
Rehabilitation and Pain Management for Fibromyalgia is offered
in our Monmouth County Medical Office in order to eliminate the
stress of finding help for this often elusive and hard-to-treat
condition. At Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation, we provide real
solutions for fibromyalgia, and make it possible for patients
to visit their doctor, physical therapist, acupuncturist, and
chiropractor in one location.
For
most people, muscle pain is a common and transitory sensation
of inflammation and soreness in the skeletal muscles of the body.
This can occur after a minor injury and usually resolves on its
own.
Myofascial
pain—chronic muscle pain—involves
areas of intense muscle spasm and pain known as trigger points.
It can affect a single muscle or an entire muscle group. It also
may be alleviated or intensified by activity or stress, depending
on each individual patient.
Myofascial
pain is a major symptom of Fibromyalgia, a condition of widespread
pain and physical disorder. Additionally, fibromyalgia sufferers
may experience pain in the joints, tendons, and other soft tissues
of the body. Some patients suffer from fatigue, lowered immunity,
sleep disturbances, headaches, irritable
bowel syndrome, and psychological issues such as depression.
Drug
therapies to reduce the symptoms of fibromyalgia are both ineffective
and harmful for the body. Not only does the long-term use of medications
cause serious health issues, but drugs do nothing to address the
cause of fibromyalgia.
Treatment
for Fibromyalgia at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation
Fibromyalgia
is not only physically disabling and psychologically devastating,
but it is often not very well understood by most general practitioners.
It cannot be seen on an x-ray, nor is there any conclusive lab
test to pinpoint the condition. Hence, fibromyalgia patients must
seek out a physician who not only has a deep understanding of
the neurological and musculoskeletal systems of the body, but
also one who understands the emotional and social aspects of this
disease.
Our
Medical Director is a physician that specializes in pain management
and rehabilitation of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.
Our medical center is also equipped to handle both the physical
and emotional aspects of the rehabilitation process.
Our
goal in treating fibromyalgia is to decrease pain, address the
causes of pain, and restore lost functioning. Toward this end,
our medical staff uses various interventional
pain management procedures in addition to physical
therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic
treatment.
Trigger
Point Injections: In order to address the widespread,
chronic muscle pain associated with Fibromyalgia, some patients
may benefit from Trigger Point Injections, which use a local anesthetic
medication or cortisone.
Acupuncture
for Fibromyalgia in New Jersey: Neurotransmitter imbalance
is deeply associated with Fibromyalgia. Acupuncture works by stimulating
specific points on the body to prompt the release of certain neurotransmitters
(serotonin and dopamine, most notably). Because neurotransmitters
regulate pain response and emotional states, this treatment will
positively affect virtually every function of the body.
Studies
have shown that patients with fibromyalgia often exhibit signs
of abnormal increases or decreases of blood flow to the brain
(abnormal cerebral blood flow). Acupuncture works to restore normal
circulation to alleviate this (possible) causative factor.
Based
on ancient Chinese theory, acupuncture was designed to restore
the body’s natural balance and harmony and return the body
to health.
Fibromyalgia
and Physical Therapy: While the body may be resistant
to physical movement or exercise, physical therapy seeks to keep
the body moving in order to reduce pain and prevent further disability.
Under the close supervision of our physical therapy department,
each patient is guided through a program of therapeutic exercise
to further these goals.
Some
physical therapy techniques are passive in nature (non-exercise);
these are used to speed healing, reduce pain, and relax the body.
Passive physical therapy for fibromyalgia may include Low Level
Laser Therapy, Electrotherapy, Ice and Heat, and Massage.
Chiropractic
Care for Fibromyalgia: Many fibromyalgia sufferers also experience
other painful conditions, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome or
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. In many cases, misalignments in the
spine wreak havoc on the body’s central nervous system.
When this occurs, there is no way to predict how physical pain
or illness may manifest; fibromyalgia is one example.
Chiropractic
care seeks to restore the body to proper functioning by correcting
misalignments (also known as subluxations) in the spine. The Doctors
of Chiropractic at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation concentrate
on a type of chiropractic that is based on Biomechanics and Physics
(Chiropractic Biophysics) to ensure optimal spinal alignment and
nervous system health.
