New
Jersey Certified Acupuncturists in the Fight against Gingivitis
Good
oral hygiene is important in order to maintain healthy, attractive
teeth and gums. An increasing body of research is also indicating
that poor dental hygiene can lead to more serious problems such
as heart disease and stroke.
The
human mouth is full of bacteria, mucus, and other particles. Together,
these form a sticky substance known as plaque, which can be removed
easily with brushing and flossing. When plaque is not cleaned off,
it hardens and becomes tarter. Tarter requires professional cleaning
to remove.
Gingivitis
is a disease of inflammation. The bacteria present in plaque and
tarter can cause the gums to become red and swollen, and may lead
to bleeding. Gingivitis is a milder form of (and the precursor to)
a more serious condition known as periodontitis.
Periodontitis
(inflammation around the tooth) occurs when gingivitis is not treated.
In this condition, the gums pull away from teeth and form infected
pockets. The body’s immune system kicks in to kill bacteria,
but bacterial toxins and the immune system’s fighting enzymes
eventually begin to break down the bones and connective tissues
of the teeth. Tooth loss is the final result of this process.
Chinese
Medicine, Acupuncture, and Gingivitis
Chinese
medicine views gingivitis as a disorder caused by a disrupted pattern
of Qi. Qi (pronounced chee) is the body’s life force. It is
meant to flow undisturbed throughout the body on channels known
as meridians. When Qi is disrupted for any reason, it fails in its
purpose of carrying nutrients and other supplies to affected areas.
This
understanding of gingivitis also holds that ‘heat’ in
the liver and stomach are related to and aggravate the problem of
gingivitis. For example, pregnant women may experience painful or
inflamed gums because the liver is working overtime and becoming
heated.
Treatment
through acupuncture is aimed at unblocking the flow of Qi through
the body’s meridians. Gum disease is often an indicator of
poor health and a weakened immune system. Acupuncture also serves
to boost immunity in order to prevent infections.
Acunpuncture
at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation Center
Acupuncture
involves the insertion of fine, filiform needles at specific points
on the body to improve health. During this process, energy imbalances
are addressed for better overall wellness and immune system health.
The practice of acupuncture is excellent for maintaining both physical
and emotional health.
It
is important to ensure that acupuncturists are certified by the
state to practice acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Monmouth Pain
and Rehabilitation makes this easy by offering only New
Jersey Certified Acupuncturists in the treatment of gingivitis
and many other health concerns.
