Medical
Care for Muscle Pain in Monmouth County
Trigger
Point Injections for the relief of muscle pain
‘Muscle
Pain’ is a broad category that refers to pain and inflammation
in the muscles of the body. In a discussion of muscle pain, it’s
important to note that we are referring to the skeletal muscle
attached to the bones by collagen fibers (tendons). The vast majority
of people will experience muscle pain at some point, and in most
cases the pain resolves in a short period of time without treatment.
Medical treatment for muscle pain is necessary only when the pain
does not go away on its own.
Chronic
muscle pain is known as Myofascial Pain—a condition of inflammation
and pain that affects the connective tissues that covers the muscles.
The symptoms of muscle pain usually involve specific ‘trigger
points,’ or areas of intense muscle spasm and pain. This may
be experienced by a muscle group or a single muscle. This pain is
sometimes intensified by activity or stress, and can be caused by
any of the following:
•
Trauma or Injury;
• Overuse from excessive exercise or work-related exertion;
• Unaccustomed exertion;
• Fibromyalgia;
• Chronic Fatigue Syndrome;
• Arthritis;
• Anxiety and Stress; and/or
• Depression.
Chronic
muscle pain is linked to other conditions, including headaches as
well as pain in the jaw, neck, lower back, pelvis, and arms and
legs.
Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation for Muscle Pain
When
muscle pain does not resolve on its own, it’s important to
seek out a physician that specializes in the musculoskeletal system.
Physiatrists (specialists in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)
are nerve, muscle, and bone specialists who concentrate on pain
management and rehabilitation. Treatment for muscle pain may involve
any of the following practices:
•
Physical Therapy;
• Massage Therapy;
• Acupuncture; and/or
• Trigger Point Injections: For some patients, muscle
pain can be a debiliatating experience that makes it difficult to
withstand normal rehabilitative practices (as outlined above). Others
simply do not respond to treatment, and continue to experience pain.
For such patients, trigger point injections are an excellent option.
Trigger Point Injections involve the use of a local anesthetic and/or
cortisone, which is injected in trigger points—extremely painful
areas of muscle.
Trigger
Point Injections and Muscle Pain at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation
Center
At
Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation Center, our paradigm of care is
centered on using the most conservative approach possible during
the pain management and rehabiltiation process. With physical therapy,
massage, and minimally invasive procedures (such as Trigger Point
Injections), we help patients avoid aggressive, damaging treatments
as well as the overuse of over-the-counter and prescription painkillers.
The overall goal is to reduce pharmaceutical intervention for patients
suffering from muscle pain so that healthy, drug-free rehabilitative
practices may be used instead.
Trigger
Point Injections at our Red Bank, NJ practice are performed with
the guidance of Ultrasound technology. This imaging technique, which
uses the reflections of high-frequency sound waves to obtain live
images of the musculoskeletal system, assists our doctors in performing
the most precise and effective Trigger Point Injections possible.
