Red
Bank, New Jersey Medical Services for Pain Management and Rehabilitation
Monmouth
County office helps patients avoid unnecessary surgery and the
excessive use of painkilling medications.
Conservative
Medicine and Pain Management
Hippocrates
was the first to promote the idea of ‘vis medicatrix naturae,’—the
belief that the body is able to heal itself. He encouraged doctors
to treat patients first with pain management techniques and then
with drugs (and only occasionally). He believed strongly that
any type of surgery should be a method of last resort.
At
our multi-disciplinary pain management and rehabilitation facility,
we are continuing in this tradition by incorporating a branch
of medicine known as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R),
or Physiatry, specializing in Interventional Pain and Musculoskeletal
Medicine. Our entire approach revolves around the idea of helping
patients to avoid unnecessary surgeries and medication, thereby
reducing the damage and stress on the body.
The
objectives of conservative care and interventional pain management
are to reduce pain, minimize drug use, and avoid surgery with
the use of minimally invasive techniques. Epidural Steroid Injections
and Viscosupplementation are some examples. Interventional pain
management also strives to help patients take advantage of customized
programs of physical therapy in order to address the causes of
pain with healthy rehabilitative practices.

What
is PM&R?
Specialists
in PM&R, or Physiatrists, focus on the non-surgical treatment
of many musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, neck
pain, disc problems, sciatica, and the numbness or tingling that
can result from these conditions. They diagnose and treat musculoskeletal
conditions by devising treatment plans to reduce pain, improve
quality of life, and (in some cases) help patients learn to use
assistive devices such as braces or wheelchairs.
During
the rehabilitation process, PM&R Doctors care for patients’
physical impairments as well the associated emotional challenges.
This is an important distinction: Physiatrists treat the patient
as a whole, helping with physical, emotional, and social needs
during the process of rehabilitation.
Following
are examples of conditions treated at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation:
Fluoroscopy
The
Physiatrists at our Red Bank, NJ facility use a variety of diagnostic
tools, including Electrodiagnostic Nerve Testing, Ultrasound, and
traditional x-rays. We will also read and interpret the results
of MRIs. Fluoroscopy is also used at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation.
This is a powerful tool that allows our physicians to view the size,
shape, and structure of a patient’s musculoskeletal system
while in motion. In our Fluoroscopy suite, patients are positioned
between an x-ray source and a fluorescent screen, producing live
images safely.
This
process helps our physicians to make accurate diagnoses, as well
as to perform certain injections when necessary. These are used
only when pain and inflammation are inhibiting a patient’s
ability to undergo a program of rehabilitation. Fluoroscopy allows
this type of pain management to be performed with more accuracy,
comfort, and better results.
In
some cases, pain prevents patients from completing a program of
rehabilitation; it is often in this situation that surgery appears
to be the best option. Our PM&R Doctors make it possible for
patients to reduce pain in order to avoid surgery.
