Post-Surgical
Physical Therapy at Monmouth County Rehabilitation
Physical
therapy is used to help patients recover normal functioning
and mobility while building strength. Following surgery, physical
therapy can assist patients in overcoming post-operative pain,
speeding up the recovery process, and avoiding future surgeries.
Back
pain, for example, is often the result of weak
core muscles. This weakness can have a negative effect on
the spine and joints and can, in some cases, lead to back pain
conditions that require surgery. Physical reconditioning through
physical therapy can help patients who have recently had back
surgery or other invasive procedures become stronger and therefore
less likely to require additional surgery.
At
Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation, there are a number of physical
therapy techniques designed to aid in the recovery process, build
strength, and increase mobility and balance. According to each
patient’s individual needs, any of the following physical
therapy practices may be used:
Therapeutic
Exercise is used to help patients increase flexibility,
build strength, and restore the body’s range of motion.
It is extremely important for post-surgical patients to attempt
therapeutic exercise only under the guidance of a trained professional
with a full understanding of the needs and limitations of the
body after surgery.
Low
Level Laser Therapy assists with the healing and
recovery process by stimulating the damaged cells of the body.
Low Level Laser Therapy, also known as Cold Laser Therapy, also
increases circulation and stimulates nerve function.
The
PowerPlate®
is a revolutionary machine that uses vibration to restore damaged
muscles and tissues in the body with the use of vibration. This
cutting-edge equipment helps to rebuild muscle strength and conditioning,
and improves overall exercise performance. As part of a post-surgical
physical therapy program, the PowerPlate assists in increasing
flexibility and movement.
Spinal
Decompression works by removing pressure on the spinal
nerves. This treatment is often used as an alternative to surgery;
post-surgical patients can also use Spinal Decompression to treat
back and neck pain problems and avoid additional surgeries.
Ultrasound
reaches deep into muscle tissues with sound waves to reduce pain,
cramping, and muscle spasms.
Ice
and Heat Therapies may be use alternately. Cold therapy
reduces pain and inflammation while heat accelerates the healing
process by increasing circulation.
Electrotherapy
may be employed to disrupt pain signals before they reach the brain.
Massage
Therapy is useful for post-surgical patients in two
ways. It improves blood circulation to speed up the healing process
and remove toxins and waste products from affected parts of the
body. It also improves patients’ range of motion by relaxing
tendons, ligaments, and muscles. This can help to prevent future
injury.
