Frequently Asked Questions about Acupuncture

We see how much our patients are benefiting from their Acupuncture treatments but realize that some may still be apprehensive about receiving Acupuncture. We’d like to introduce you to Nicole, our Board Certified Acupuncturist and have her answer our most frequently asked questions about receiving an Acupuncture Treatment at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation!

Many ask, do the acupuncture needles hurt?
The needles are very thin and do not penetrate very deeply into the muscle. Most of the time you do not even feel the needle entering the skin, during the treat or when they are removed. Instead, you simply lie restfully in a spa-like setting. Many patients explain that they feel very relaxed after their acupuncture treatment.

Will I bleed from the needles used during acupuncture treatment?
Because the needles are so thin, rarely will there be any blood and if it does happen it is usually a drop when the needle is removed. But again, this is rare.

Do I need to lay very still during my acupuncture treatment?
Small movements are OK during the treatment. An acupuncturist can always help you reposition yourself if you do feel uncomfortable during your treatment.

Is Acupuncture safe?
The needles used during an acupuncture treatment all new in sterile packaging and never re-used. The needles are also disposed of properly. The acupuncture treatment is performed in a comfortable medical office.

What conditions can Acupuncture help with?
Acupuncture can help with many conditions including Knee Pain, Neck Pain, Foot Pain, Back Pain, Digestive Issues, Sinus Issues, Fertility, Anxiety and Stress. To learn more about how Acupuncture can help with each of these conditions and many more visit our Acupuncture Page here.

How Does Acupuncture Work?
The needle creates and provokes a deep response in the central nervous system, dilating blood vessels, bringing in a influx of healing elements to the affected area, helping nourish and restore peripheral nerves. This response is very hard to create without acupuncture. Medicine cannot change the internal environment of the body except in few cases like with insulin injections, antibiotics and certain other medications. But the actual tissue change is very hard to accomplish. Acupuncture can do this and that is why it has been so useful throughout history.
