In 1974, the director of the detox program at Lincoln Memorial Hospital in the Bronx supervised a study involving the use of a combination of acupuncture and methadone in heroin addicts. Methadone is a synthetic opioid used to help wean addicts off of other addictive opioids.
The project continued for four years. Several hundred patients in the methadone/ acupuncture program were gradually detoxified. Eventually, acupuncture was found to be so effective in treating heroin addiction that it replaced the methodone completely.
