Whiplash and Chiropractic

Whiplash is the term used to describe symptoms of damage to the soft tissues of the cervical (neck) spine following an auto accident or other trauma. It is involved in cases in which the neck has experienced a sudden and traumatic distortion, such as when a vehicle has been hit from behind.

Whiplash leads to serious health problems when the condition is not properly addressed. It is extremely important to recognize symptoms and seek treatment as soon as possible. When whiplash symptoms are ignored, the result may be chronic pain. Chronic pain is a more difficult condition to treat.

Symptoms of whiplash can include pain in the neck and back; soreness in the shoulders; headaches; and the sensation of ‘pins and needles’ in the arms and legs. Other possible symptoms are visual and auditory disturbances or vertigo. The sooner these warning signs appear, the more serious the whiplash injury. In some cases, these effects are not felt until several days after the accident.

Chiropractic care is more than simply a treatment for the pain associated with whiplash; it works to correct the cause of the pain and other symptoms. It can increase joint and postural movement and reduce pain and inflammation.
