What is Cupping Therapy?

Jul 20, 2015 | Acupuncture

Did you know that Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation offers cupping therapy in Red Bank and Wall, NJ? Both of our locations now offer Cupping therapy, a Traditional Chinese Medicine that offers many health benefits as well as treatments to various symptoms. Our Acupuncturist, Nicole practices cupping on many of our patients – learn how you too can benefit from cupping therapy.

What is cupping therapy?

One way to explain or describe cupping is the inverse of massage. Rather than applying pressure to the muscle, the suction uses pressure to pull the skin, tissue and the muscle upward. Cupping can often be used during an Acupuncture treatment or it may be used alone in its entirety.

Cupping was developed thousands of years ago and though the techniques have become more modernized, the philosophy of cupping is still the same.

Cupping involves placing glass, bamboo or plastic jars on the skin to help create a vacuum by suctioning out the air. The underlying tissue is raised or sucked partway into the cup. The reasoning behind cupping is to help create and enhance circulation and help relieve pain, remove heat and pull out the body’s toxins that linger in our body’s tissues.

You usually will feel a tight sensation in the area of the cup. Often the feeling is both relaxing and soothing. Our Acupuncturist will determine whether the cups should be moved around or left in place – they may remain on your body briefly or for an extended amount of time. Each treatment would be unique to your body’s needs on that given day.

How does Cupping Therapy work?

There are a number of methods of cupping, two of the most common here in the U.S are called “fixed cupping” and “moving cupping”.

During fixed cupping, cups are placed on a selected area of your body and then left in place without being moved.

Moving Cupping, the name implies in this method – the practitioner applies massage oil or cream on your skin in selected places, puts the cups over the area that is being treated and then slides them around that region of your body – most commonly the back. The cups slide easily because the cream has lubricated your body.

Cupping provides relief for many health conditions.

Cupping has numerous benefits – it can help remove toxins from the body and can help stimulate the flow of fresh blood, lymph and Qi to the affected area and throughout the body. It often works wonders for patients with the flu, colds, coughs, back and muscle pain, poor circulation, anxiety, allergies, fevers, aches and other pains.

Cupping can also help patients and benefit with stress, pain, allergies, fatigue, flu, colds, back pain, anxiety, muscle aches, red itchy skin and even fever.

To learn more about how you can benefit from Cupping Therapy or Acupuncture you can make an appointment with our Licensed Acupuncturist, Nicole.

When the disc shifts just a little bit it is defined as a disc bulge and is known to cause pain for a lot of people with or without pressure onto the nerve.
