How to Survive Pollen Season

May 18, 2015 | Acupuncture

Are you sick of sneezing and rubbing your eyes yet?  Learn how you can reduce your exposure to pollen and help keep your seasonal allergies in check. We’ll give you a few simple steps to help you avoid the pollen season.

How to Reduce Exposure to Pollen:

Allergies are your body’s reaction to particles that it considers to be foreign, like allergens. To minimize your allergy symptoms, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology ACAAI suggests a few things to reduce your exposure to pollen by:

Avoiding clothing made of synthetic fabrics can be helpful because they can produce an electric charge when rubbed that can attract and make pollen stick to you. Natural fiber clothing like cotton are a better option.

If you plan to exercise outdoors, do so in the late afternoon or early evening – the pollen counts are the lowest at this time of day. We know you’d love to get outside with this beautiful spring weather, but if you plan to do intense exercise – it’s really better to do it indoors because your increased breathing could ultimately make you inhale even more pollen.

Wear gloves and a mask when out in your garden. April showers bring May flowers – this will help to filter pollen, also make sure you avoid touching your eyes. When you are finished outside be sure to shower and wash your clothes.

Improve Indoor Allergens

Reduce your expose to indoor allergens such as dust, pet dander, etc. This may help reduce your allergy symptoms.

To improve your indoor air quality be sure to vacuum your house and furniture often, avoid tracking in dirt or other outside allergens by taking your shoes off before entering the home. You can also use a dehumidifier or filter air purifier.

Vitamin D for Allergy Sufferers

If you suffer from allergies or asthma then optimizing your Vitamin D levels can be very beneficial. There has been research that shows that Vitamin D deficiency may be one of the primary causes of asthma. Vitamin D will help regulate your immune system.

In a perfect world, our Vitamin D would come from the right amount of daily sun exposure, however because many of us work a typical 9am-5pm job we do not get proper sun exposure – especially during the winter months of shorter days. Also, you should be aware that sunscreen shields your skin from making any Vitamin D.

Natural Allergy Treatment

Acupuncture can help treat allergies by addressing imbalances in the body with the use of acupuncture. According to traditional Chinese Medicine, allergies are caused by weak immune systems. Our acupuncture department examines our patients to discover issues rooted deeply in each individual who suffers from allergy symptoms where they may be deficient. Strengthening these deficiencies the body is able to ward off sneezing, runny nose, watery or itchy eyes all caused by symptoms of allergens.

When the disc shifts just a little bit it is defined as a disc bulge and is known to cause pain for a lot of people with or without pressure onto the nerve.
