Carpal Tunnel Syndrome at Work

Chiropractic care and physical therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome in Monmouth County

It’s not hard to see how today’s uncertain economic climate can affect the health of workers. With cutbacks at many companies, it seems a lot of people are working more hours than ever before. In fact, a recent poll* showed that, in order to maintain job security, many employees are willing to take on additional projects and responsibilities (71%) and work more hours (64%).

What does this mean for the health of your body? For that matter, how does this news relate to holistic wellness or chiropractic care? On a very basic level, long hours engaged in any repetitive activity can lead to neck pain, back pain, tendonitis, and many other health conditions.

The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research has found that musculoskeletal disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome cost around $20 billion annually in workers’ compensation—an additional $100 billion goes to lost productivity and employee turnover.

Carpal Tunnel

Today, I’d like to talk specifically about carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel is the compression of the median nerve, which runs from the middle of the neck down to the fingers. This compression causes pain, numbness, or tingling in the fingers.

Carpal tunnel is caused by the repetitive and constant use of the hands, especially when the wrist is extended such as when using a keyboard.  At the highest risk for work related carpal tunnel are people who spend long hours in offices (typing), assembly line workers, dentists—basically any professional that uses their hands in such way that combines both force and repetition for long periods of time.

Chiropractic, Physical Therapy, and Low Level Laser Therapy for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Because the body is a complex system, it makes sense that a multifaceted approach is often the best way to treat any condition, and carpal tunnel is no exception. In combination with chiropractic, physical therapy and low level cold laser therapy are effective in mild to moderate cases of the condition.

Chiropractic works by realigning the spine to its optimal position (any misalignment of the spine could contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome). Low level laser therapy accelerates cell processes, which can help to decrease the nerve-related symptoms (pain and numbness) associated with carpal tunnel.
