New Treatment for Osteoarthritis Brings Relief for Knee Pain in Monmouth County

Our pain management center now has the latest treatments for more conditions than ever before. Today’s blog will center on treating osteoarthritis-related knee pain.

As I’m sure many of you have noticed, there have been some serious changes at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation Center. By bringing in a new Medical Doctor, cutting-edge imaging techniques, and host of innovative treatments, this place has really become the type of medical/holistic practice I’ve dreamed of for years.

One new procedure we’ve been doing a lot of lately is called viscosupplementation. This is a treatment specifically designed for osteoarthritis in the knee. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis suffered worldwide. It is also the most frequently experienced joint condition.

The knee is a joint that connects the thigh with the leg; it is the largest joint in the body. It is also particularly vulnerable to injury because of its complex structure and because it is an active weight-bearing joint.

Here’s what happens: the knee is protected by a lubricating substance known as synovial fluid. Over time, the cartilage that protects the ends of the bones of the knee deteriorates, and this synovial fluid loses the ability to provide lubrication and shock absorption. The bones are no longer able to glide smoothly over one another, making moving and bending the knee painful.

What is viscosupplementation?

This is the process of injecting hyaluronic acid (a main component of synovial fluid) into the knee joint. Because hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the knee joint, but is lost due to degeneration and osteoarthritis, replacing this dissipated lubricant can relieve pain and help get the joint moving properly. The process of viscosupplementation is particularly useful for patients who are unresponsive to analgesic medications, or are unable to benefit from other rehabilitative options.

At Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation center, we use an injectable medication known as hyaluronan, or Synvisc. Synvisc may help to alleviate osteoarthritis symptoms for up to six months. It can also put patients in a position to rehabilitate without the need for knee surgery, or to delay the necessity for such surgeries.
