Slipped disc? Sciatica? Pinched nerve? Herniated disc? Spinal traction can help!

Slipped disc? Sciatica? Pinched nerve? Herniated disc? Spinal traction can help!

spinal traction

The team at Monmouth Pain may recommend spinal traction to address these and several other common conditions.

Spinal traction takes the pressure off of compressed areas of the spine by stretching it. This process is the key to easing pain and helping the body heal itself along the way.

Traction can be done manually or by using mechanical traction to improve spinal alignment, reduce pressure on joints, and relieve pain.

How can it be done in the office and at home? Once one of our practitioners determines that traction could be beneficial for your condition, he or she will typically place you on a specific treatment plan.  He or she may also prescribe some at-home traction devices that you could use to continue experiencing relief.

If you are experiencing back or neck pain and are looking to find relief, call to set up your free consultation today!

arthritis

Did you know there are more than 100 different types of arthritis and related conditions?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and is also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease. Osteoarthritis is a result of “wear and tear” on the joint overtime, causing the protective cartilage that provides cushion at the ends of your bones to wear down, and commonly affects the joints of the hands, knees, hips, and spine.  This often results in pain, stiffness, and decreased range of motion at the joint.  Arthritis symptoms may remain the same, but often progress with time, resulting in chronic pain, inability to do daily activities, and even joint deformity.

Inflammatory arthritis is the result of an overactive immune system, causing inflammation of the joints. Common types of inflammatory arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis, and even gout, just to name a few. Unlike OA, which is caused by physical wear and tear, inflammatory arthritis is an autoimmune disorder, and is the result of a pathological misfiring of immune cells attacking healthy tissue and causing inflammation at the joint. Symptoms include joint pain and stiffness, swelling, redness, warmth at joints, weakness, and fatigue.  Unlike OA, inflammatory arthritis conditions often affect multiple joints at once, tend to be symmetrical in nature (affecting both sides of the body), and symptoms can fluctuate in severity, known as “flares.”  According to a 2009 study conducted by the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology Clinical Trials (OMERACT) RA Flare Group, the danger of untreated RA flares is they can place you at greater risk of joint damage, poorer long-term outcomes, and even contribute to worsening cardiovascular disease.  Because of this, it’s important to listen to your body and be able to identify a flare when it starts and begin early interventions.

Improve your Surgical Success with pre and post surgery rehabilitation at Monmouth Pain!

You’ve checked all the boxes, tried all the therapies, now the only thing left to do is surgery. Pre and post-surgical has been proven to improve your surgery’s outcome without as many complications.

At Monmouth Pain in Monmouth and Ocean county NJ, we pride ourselves on giving the highest quality of care and focus on our patient success. Our specialized therapists are involved from the pre- surgery program through your post-op progress.

I know what you’re thinking; why do I have to do therapy before my surgery? By strengthening the injured region, we are creating a more stable joint going into surgery while increasing mobility through stretching and exercising. This produces a healthier joint, allowing your surgeons to perform the necessary repairs more easily and effectively. The increased pre-op stability and mobility will decrease healing time post-operation as well.

Surgery

Once you come out of surgery, most doctors check in on you a few times but what you don’t realize is they also check your therapy progress. Your success, their success, and our success are all intertwined. It is important to start your therapy as soon as your surgeon gives the okay to prevent re-injury and reduce recovery time.

Since you’ve been consistent with your pre-surgical care, post-surgical therapy should be much easier and results will come much quicker.

While in therapy, you will be given various exercises and stretches to continue to strengthen and increase mobility to build a healthier joint. To ensure a quick and effective recovery, you will also be given a home exercise program to facilitate the progress.

At Monmouth Pain, our expert therapists are here to help you every step of the way to navigate the choppy waters of pre and post-surgical care. Sometimes surgery is unavoidable so let Monmouth Pain facilitate your recovery and support you as you move forward!

Our Services include but are not limited to:

  • We utilize Spinal Decompression traction to open up the vertebrae in your neck or lower back gently providing intervertebral discs more nourishment of blood and giving the spinal nerves more space to function properly. This therapy is best for patients who suffer from disc herniations that impinge on the spinal nerves causing pain symptoms from the neck into the upper extremities or lower back pain into the lower extremities. This therapy helps patients avoid disc herniation surgery including microdiscectomies and lumbar fusion.
  • Powerplate therapy is used at Monmouth Pain – a form of vibration therapy to awaken the surrounding muscles and nerves. This therapy is optimally used in patients who suffer with Neuropathy in their feet; restoring or improving the numbness and tingling that is typically felt with patients suffering from Neuropathy. This service can help avoid nerve decompression surgery used to combat neuropathy.
  • At Monmouth Pain we may also apply our cold laser to an injured area to promote blood flow and reduce inflammation. This gives your body the ability to repair and refocus to expedite the healing process.
  • At Monmouth Pain we offer physical and occupational therapies. These licensed Doctors help avoid surgery by rehabbing your injuries using therapeutic activities and exercises, Neuromuscular Re-education, and manual therapies. Patients looking to avoid surgery can be sure they will be rehabbed at the root of their cause of pain, rather than getting a quick fix.
  • Chiropractic Care offered at Monmouth Pain will help you avoid surgery by diagnosing the source of your condition. Our practitioners are licensed Doctors who excel in neuromusculoskeletal issues by finding the root of your pain and treating your condition using manual soft tissue techniques and spinal manipulation to move joints that may not be moving properly and providing you with proper alignment to ensure your nerve and muscle health.
  • Our highly skilled acupuncturists promote healing through their own specialized techniques by relaxing the body, promoting blood and energy flow, and allowing nerves to refocus and heal tissues.
  • Our medical doctor at Monmouth Pain provides a plethora of surgery alternatives including gel injections to avoid knee surgery, epidural steroid injections, and many other non-invasive techniques to reduce pain.

The benefits of vibration therapy utilizing Monmouth Pain’s Power Plate technology.

The benefits of vibration therapy utilizing Monmouth Pain’s Power Plate technology.

When you think of rehabilitative care, you most likely think of back adjustments, massage therapy, and similar therapeutic approaches. Vibration therapy utilizing the Power Plate, one of the latest in innovative athletic-training technology, might not come to mind.

Yet such advanced technology is exactly what we offer at MPR to ensure you have access to the safest and most effective ways of improving your body’s alignment, strength, and overall function.

The purpose of vibration therapy is to stimulate muscle contractions by sending 30 to 50 vibrations per second at safe levels of energy throughout your body. Your muscles naturally react with contractions at the same rate that are three-dimensional for a complete and in-depth workout.

The Power Plate is meant for everyone, whether you are older or younger, in shape or not. In fact, because it requires minimal effort on the user’s part, it’s an ideal option for those with limiting health conditions, such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and osteoporosis.

Some other benefits of the Power Plate include:

  • increased muscle strength and flexibility
  • improved range of motion
  • increased bone mineral density
  • reduced pain and soreness
  • faster recovery from exercise

Moreover, vibration can be used for pain relief. Not only will it loosen tight muscles and increase blood flow, the Power Plate vibration can actually activate your central nervous system.
