Viscosupplementation
At Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation, we take pride in our revolutionary new system of pain management and rehabilitation. Our services are cutting-edge, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Today, I want to talk specifically about one of our services that has gained much popularity and praise among our patients: Viscosupplementation.
In the last ten years, Viscosupplementation has been a breakthrough in the treatment of knee pain and Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. OA is the most common form of arthritis worldwide and causes chronic pain for many of my patients. Pain in the knee is usually worse following an activity, especially overuse of the affected knee. As OA progresses, symptoms generally become more severe. Pain can become continuous, and for some knee patients, knee pain can totally limit activity and make everyday movements unbearable or impossible.
Some knee patients may benefit from acupuncture or physical therapy to treat their pain. For other patients, the severity and cause of the pain could be greater. At Monmouth Pain, we offer interventional pain management strategies, such as Viscosupplementation, to treat chronic knee pain and individuals with OA of the knee.
How It Works
Patients with knee pain and OA have lower concentrations of hyaluronic acid in their joints. Hyaluronic acid is naturally made by the human body for joint fluid and it serves as an extra shock absorber, reduces waste from the joint fluid, offers nutrition to cartilage, and decreases tears and erosion of cartilage. The knee bends an average of 1 million times a year, so keeping that joint lubricated is essential. Viscosupplementation involves injecting hyaluronic acid into the knee joint. This adds lubrication to allow the bones of the knee joint to move smoothly over each other and acts as a shock absorber for joint loads.
The Viscosupplementation injection is administered directly into the knee from a point on the side and under the kneecap. The injections take no longer than 15 seconds and up to 12 weeks may be required for the injections to take full effect. Patients commonly report pain reduction and increased joint mobility lasting from a few months to over a year.
The process of Viscosupplementation involves a series of 3-5 injections into the knee joint over the course of a month or so. By supplementing our patient’s natural lubricants, Viscosupplementation reduces pain and stiffness in treated joints for easier, more comfortable movement. Viscosupplementation is proven to show relief in patients who don’t benefit from medications or rehabilitation treatments. It is believed that the Hyaluronic acid, injected through Viscosupplementation, causes pain relief due to the presence of a new “lubricant” in the knee. In many cases, patients who receive Viscosupplementation avoid unnecessary surgeries and the overuse of long-term pain killers.
