What is breast cancer?

In a health body, natural systems control the creation, growth and death of cells. Cancer occurs when these systems do not work correctly and the cells to not die at a normal rate. There is more cell growth than cell death. The excess growth can make a mass of tissue.

Breast Cancer occurs when cells in the breast divide and grow without their normal control. Tumors in the breast tend to grow slowly. By the time a lump is large enough to feel, it may have been growing for as long as 10 years.

Factors that Affect Breast Cancer Risk

Many factors are linked to breast cancer risk. Some factors that affect risk a great deal and others by only small amount. There are some risk factors that you can’t change. Two examples are the of the most common risk factors are being a woman and getting older – two things that you can not obviously change. Although the rate is much less, breast cancer can also happen in males.

Why is Early Detection so important?

Breast cancer screenings can help find breast cancer early – this is when the changes of survival are the highest. Breast cancer screening is important for all woman, no matter their level of risks. Women at higher risk may need breast cancer screening earlier and more often than women at average risk.

Types of Preventative Breast Cancer Screening Tests

Along with these breast cancer screenings doctors encourage women to give themselves monthly self-breast exams to look for changes or lumps.

Clinical Breast Exam is a physical exam done by a health care provider that can be part of your annual gynecological exam or regular medical check-up.

Mammography is a screening test that uses X-rays to create images of the breast. It is the most effective screening tool used to find breast cancer today. It may also be used as a follow-up test on an abnormal finding, this would be called a diagnostic mammogram.

Breast MRI is a tool that uses magnetic fields to create images of the breast. It is used in breast cancer screening for some women at higher risk. During this time this test is mostly used as a follow-up test after an abnormal finding and for staging breast cancer.

What can we do to help the cause?

Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation is participating in spreading awareness for breast cancer. Join us on Thursday, October 1st as we’ll kick-off our month-wide promotion. We’ll be collecting donations for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in office from both employees and patients for the month of October.

Susan G. Komen’s mission is simple – to save lives and end breast cancer forever. They work to educate, support research, offer grants and financial as well as emotional assistance and advocate for better breast cancer policy. In a broader sense, they work hard to empower others, ensure quality care for all and invest in science to find the cures. Susan G.
