Tough Mudder: Monmouth County Rehabilitation Director Toughens Up for a Good Cause

Dec 17, 2010 | Wellness

I recently had the opportunity to do two of the things I love best: staying active and healthy while simultaneously helping others. On November 20th, I participated in the Tough Mudder event in Englishtown, NJ. For those of you unfamiliar with Tough Mudder, it is a 7-12 mile mud and trail run. It takes place in the worst conditions—over uneven, wet, and hilly ground.  If that isn’t bad enough, every mile or so there is a military-style obstacle to overcome.  Just how tough was this event? The obstacles were designed by British Special Forces to test the will of participants; the event bills itself as ‘the TOUGHEST one day event on the planet.’

What’s even better, though, is that Tough Mudder benefits the Wounded Warrior Project. This organization provides crucial support to seriously wounded service men and women during the transition between active duty and civilian life. What’s best about this program is that it addresses the emotional, physical, financial, and social needs of wounded veterans.

My group, Team Thoracic Park, raised $1300 to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. When this event comes around again in April, I’ve set a goal of raising more than $3,000.

I’m really proud of my participation in this event, specifically since it encompassed so many of the goals I’ve set for myself on a personal level. In particular, I’m thrilled to see that this organization views injured soldiers from a truly holistic perspective; that is, with a clear understanding of not only the physical wounds, but also psychological, emotional wounds that can occur from any trauma.

These issues are truly near to my heart. In my professional life (as the Director of Rehabilitation at our Red Bank pain management office), this objective of providing services to patients in pain—both physical and emotional—has become a reality for me in the shape of our Monmouth County office.

For example, there was more than one injured athlete at Tough Mudder. Our office has comprehensive rehabilitation programs for sports injuries as well as auto accident injuries and other painful conditions. Pain management and rehabilitation may include a number of modalities, all offered in one location, and which include medical care for pain management, acupuncture (which addresses both physical and psychological issues), physical therapy, and chiropractic care.
