Spinal discs primary purpose are to provide cushion between each of the twenty three vertebral segments in the spine. Spinal discs act as ligaments to hold the spine together and allow for movement of the vertebrae. If you are suffering from a bulging or herniated disc in Monmouth County contact our Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation facility for a comprehensive herniated disc treatment plan available in New Jersey.
There are two components of these cartilage based spinal discs: a harder outer shell exterior, or the annulus fibrosis, and a softer inner center, or the nucleus pulposus. Spinal disc issues and injuries like disc degeneration or bulging discs, or disc herniations may trigger different symptoms such as, back pain, neck pain, or sciatica.
When the annulus fibrosus ruptures and the nucleus pulposus bulge out, pressure is applied to the nerves of the spine which can result in serious pain. Disc herniations are another common issue that cause severe back pain. Disc herniations are diagnoses when the soft center of the spinal disc bulges back toward the spinal cord. Disc herniations in the lumbar spine can cause leg pain, numbness, weakness in addition to low back pain.
Herniated and bulging discs are diagnosed due to two main causes:
Disc Degeneration: During childhood, intervertebral discs are composed of about 80% water. When the body begins to age, the discs dry up and become less flexible and more vulnerable to damage.
Injury or Trauma to the Spine: Trauma from an auto accident or sports injury can commonly cause disc issues. Trauma may also occur over time as the result of ongoing postural issues.
