Migraine Symptoms

A migraine can consist of various type of symptoms such as severe headaches, nausea and altered bodily perceptions, which can last anywhere from four to 72 hours.

There are 4 stages of migraines: Prodrome, Aura, Pain and Postdrome.

Prodromal symptoms occur in 40-60% of migraine sufferers. This phase consists of altered mood, irritability, depression (or euphoria), sleepiness, food cravings, stiff muscle and diarrhea or constipation.

Visual aura is the most common neurological symptom of migraines. Symptoms can include flashes of white, black or multicolored lights, blurred or cloudy vision, auditory or olfactory hallucinations, temporary dysphasia, vertigo, tingling of the face & extremities, numbness of face & extremities, and sensitivity to touch.

Pain can be moderate to severe and usually occurs on one side of the head. Other common symptoms during this phase are sensitivity to light, sound, noise, motion, smells as well as nausea and vomiting.

Postdrome occurs after the pain has subsided, some patients feel tired, depressed and have additional head pain and gastrointestinal symptoms. Others may experience euphoria and increased energy.

Chiropractic for Migraines & Headaches

A subluxation, or a misalignment of the neck, can irritate the nerves that travel the length of the spine to and from the brain, causing a migraine sufferer to be more prone to chemical imbalances in the brain. The pressure against inflamed nerves can be very painful, but by realigning the vertebrae, it can relieve some of this pressure and alleviate the headaches. Cervical kyphosis, or reverse curvature of the neck, in particular is connected with migraines.

Our team of chiropractors in Forked River use a method called Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP), which is a higher level of chiropractic that uses a comprehensive, systematic, and scientific approach for reliable results for migraine sufferers and many other disorders.

Although medication will temporarily relieve the pain, our chiropractic care in Lacey Township will target the underlying cause and treat it accordingly – correcting the issue – without the risk of potential harmful side effects.
