Ankle sprains are among the most prevalent sports injuries often documented for accounting for 40% of all athletic sports injuries. A sprain occurs when the ankle rolls, twists, or turns in a way that causes the ligaments to be forced beyond the normal range of motion causing the ligaments to stretch or tear. There are two types of ankle sprains:
- Inversion Ankle Sprain – Foot falls inward causing outer ligaments to hyper-extend resulting in pain on the outside of the ankle.
- Eversion Ankle Sprain – Foot twisted outwards causing the inner ligaments to hyper-extend resulting in pain on the inside of the ankle

Symptoms of an ankle sprain typically vary depending on the severity of the sprain, but often include the following:
- Weight-bearing Pain
- Tenderness to the touch
- Limited Range of Motion
