The body’s circulatory system is formed by arteries and veins that carry blood to and from the heart. Veins return your blood back to the heart, and veins also contain valves that sometimes dysfunctional, and over time can result in the formation of varicose veins.
Varicose veins are twisted, dilated veins most commonly affecting the lower extremities. They are thought to be caused by a combination of a genetic predisposition, weakened vascular walls, and increased pressure in the veins, often worsened by excessive weight. Symptoms of varicose veins include skin discoloration around a vein, a heavy or aching feeling in your legs, burning, throbbing, or swelling of your leg, or itching near the affected vein.
Some factors that increase the risk of varicose veins include a family history of vein problems, older age, long-term increased intra-abdominal pressure due to obesity, pregnancy, chronic constipation, or a tumor. The symptoms of varicose veins often worsen considerably with prolonged standing.
If varicose veins progress, potential complications include infection, leg ulcers, and clotting. Home care includes such measures as compressive stockings, weight loss, and avoiding prolonged standing and straining, exercise, wearing nonrestrictive clothing, and elevation of the affected leg to reduced swelling. Medical treatments include external laser thermal ablation, endovenous thermal ablation, endovenous sclerotherapy, and surgery.
Surgery was once the most common medical intervention, but it has largely has been replaced by a procedure called endovenous thermal ablation (EVLA). This non-invasive laser procedure can be performed under local anesthesia and may have better outcomes and fewer complications than the traditional surgical treatment for painful, unsightly varicose veins. It can be done as an out-patient procedure, and can completely remove varicose veins. The procedure uses a laser to cause the varicose vein to shrink and collapse. After the procedure, the body naturally re-routes the blood circulation to the surrounding healthier veins.
This simple procedure is the easiest and most efficient way to treat varicose veins. Our medical vein specialist, Dr. Dmitry Gorelick, specializes in this advanced treatment for varicose veins. Contact our office to schedule a consultation to permanently treat your varicose vines.
