Dear Monmouth Pain & Rehabilitation Family,
I’ve got a story that might hit home for anyone dealing with an injury. This winter, I took a rough spill while snowboarding, landing me with a serious shoulder injury. Dislocation, rotator cuff tear, labral tear, and compression fracture. A few surgeons suggested I could only get back to 100% (or even close to it) with surgery, but I decided to go all-in on rehabilitation instead—acupuncture and physical therapy, right here at our Wall Township treatment facility.
Three months later, I’m over 95% recovered and back to my active life. I’m sharing this not to focus on me, but because going through rehab as a patient taught me some practical lessons that can help you tackle your own recovery.
The injury wasn’t fun—every movement hurt, and daily tasks became a challenge. But I stuck with a focused rehab plan, showing up for every acupuncture session and physical therapy appointment. No skipping, no excuses. The result? My shoulder’s almost back to normal, and I avoided surgery entirely. Going through this process gave me a front-row seat to what rehab really demands, and I came away with three straightforward lessons that can make a big difference for anyone working to get better.
1. Have a Clear Goal in Mind
Recovery starts with knowing what you’re aiming for. For me, it was getting my shoulder strong enough to skip surgery and keep up with my active lifestyle. Having that target kept me motivated, even when progress felt slow. Think about what you want—maybe it’s playing with your grandkids, hitting the gym, or just moving without pain. A clear goal gives you something to work toward, and our team at Monmouth Pain & Rehabilitation can help you map out the steps to get there.
2. Stick to the Plan
Rehab works when you commit to it. I made sure to attend every appointment and do my exercises, even when life got hectic. Consistency is key—those steady efforts build up to real results. We know sticking to a plan can be tough, so we make it easier with flexible scheduling and a supportive team to keep you on track. Show up, do the work, and you’ll see progress.
3. Give It Time
Patience isn’t always easy, especially when you just want to feel better already. I had to remind myself to take it one day at a time and trust that my body was healing. Small wins, like reaching a bit higher or sleeping better, kept me going. Give yourself permission to move at your own pace—every step forward counts. Our team will be there to guide you, celebrating those milestones along the way.
These lessons aren’t just about my shoulder—they’re about what it takes to recover from any injury. At Monmouth Pain & Rehabilitation, we’ve seen countless patients turn things around with non-surgical approaches like acupuncture, physical therapy, and chiropractic care. If you’re dealing with pain or an injury, you don’t have to settle for it. Our team is here to help you get back to the life you love, just like I did.
